Oil Painting – “Portuguese Bend, Rancho Palos Verdes”

I recently joined the California Art Club and went on my first plein air outing with the group on February 12th.  Bridget Duffy and I went together.  The location was Abalone Cove at Portuguese Bend, Rancho Palos Verdes.  Jason Situ was painting nearby and put Bridget and me into his painting while she and I were having lunch on the grass.  I placed another artist into my painting, after asking her permission to do so.  The weather was ideal and we had a great time.

Some days in California provide a crisp bright light, and this day was one of them.  Even before I began painting landscapes, I looked forward to such days, as they seemed to fill me with “the unbearable lightness of being.”  On the bluff where I was painting, the light shined in such a way that portions of the grass appeared to be almost chartreuse.
